Baseball sees 2016 season come to a close

Carlisle Koestler (29) had seven strikeouts in 3.1 innings in game one

The 2016 baseball season came to an end on Saturday for the Hinds Community College Eagles, as Hinds was defeated in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state playoffs by Northwest Community College.

The Eagles of Hinds won game one of the best two-of-three series, 12-11, on Friday night in Senatobia, but were defeated by the Rangers in back-to-back games on Saturday to see the season to a close.

Northwest won game one, 7-3, and game two, 9-2, to end the Eagles' season at 25-22.

In Friday night's opener, the Eagles received a tremendous relief outing from Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg), who struck out seven hitters in 3.1 innings of work in a 12-11 victory that took nearly 4 ½ hours to complete and lasted 10 innings.

Koestler, a Southeastern Louisiana University signee, moved to 10-3 with the victory.

Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) led the way for Hinds on the offensive side, as he finished with two hits and one RBI, and was helped out by Will Craft (Hernando), who had three RBI on the strength of a bases clearing triple.

Craft and Quinton Logan (Natchez) each had two hits in game one on Saturday, but it was not enough, as the Eagles' bats did not pick up the slack, thus leading to a 7-3 defeat and an eventual game three of the series.

Trent Driver (Raymond) earned the loss in Saturday's opener, game two of the series.

The Eagles received a solid offensive output from Hunter Bell (Vicksburg) and Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) in the final game on Saturday, as the outfield duo each picked up two hits.

Hunter Wilson (Brandon) had a hit and drove in a run, but as in game one, the attack was futile and the Rangers would extend their season with the victory.

Colin Coates (Nesbit) was charged with the loss in relief.
